A Storied Legacy: Gandhi Hall's History Unveiled

Constructed in 1904 by the acclaimed architect Charles Frederick Stevens from Mumbai, Gandhi Hall was initially named King Edward Hall. In 1905, the grand opening of the hall was officiated by George V, the Prince of Wales, with a total cost amounting to ₹2,50,000. The architectural style is Indo-Gothic, featuring white stones from Seoni and red stones from Patan, both in Madhya Pradesh.

In 1948, H. H. Yeshwant Rao Holkar II renamed the hall as Gandhi Hall in honor of Mahatma Gandhi after a gap of 50 years. The recent renovation under the ‘Smart City Indore’ project in 2021 restored the hall to its original grandeur. The interiors now boast marble flooring, a wooden stage, captivating paintings on the walls, and a meticulously restored clock tower.

Gandhi Hall - Architectural Marvel

Gandhi Hall, a prime example of British influence on Indian architecture, showcases a blend of Indo-Gothic elements.The structure extends over 112 feet and includes a stage and gallery, enclosed by an open veranda. Noteworthy Rajput-style minarets with domes adorn the corners, and the entrance is from the south.

The high ceiling, made of white plaster of paris, is adorned with gold, while palladian arches, a terraced roof, and ornamental moldings add to its grandeur. The iconic clock tower, standing at ninety feet, once again chimes after meticulous restoration work carried out by watchmaker P.B. Lapalikar in 2020.

Presently, Gandhi Hall is under the administration of the Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC). It functions as a notable space for art and cultural exhibitions, book fairs, and various events, boasting a capacity to host up to 2,000 individuals indoors and accommodating even larger gatherings on its extensive grounds.

However, concerns about neglect and upkeep persist. Some caretakers and conservationists have expressed worries about the deteriorating ceiling, emphasizing the need for attention. Despite this, the citizens of Indore continue to cherish the iconic sound of the clock ringing every fifteen minutes since its restoration.
